William "George" Steinmetz, age 86 of Lancaster, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at Fairfield Medical Center. He was born April 18, 1936, in Columbus, the son of the late William F. and Ruth O. (Leyndecker) Steinmetz. He was graduate of Groveport High School. After time spent racing motorcycles, George earned his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering - with honors - from The Ohio State University, class of 1966. He retired from A.E.P. with 30 years of service. After retiring, he founded Steinmetz Restorations, with his son, where they restored many classic cars over the following 30 years. He was a member of the Lithopolis Masonic Lodge #169 for over 50 years and was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Lancaster.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Saundra (Mechling) Steinmetz; son, Jeff (Jennifer) Steinmetz, of Lancaster; granddaughter, Laura Steinmetz; sister, Eloise Mertz, of Lancaster; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Ron Harrison. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Phyllis Wright.
A memorial service including a Masonic service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 16, 2023, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 105 E. Mulberry St., Lancaster with Pastors Diana Gugel and Brian Dillahunt officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are in the care of Taylor-Theller Funeral & Cremation Service, Amanda.
