Vernon “Pete” Courtney, 86, of Amanda, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the Pickering House. He was born June 1, 1932 in Carroll, Ohio and was the son of the late Oscar and Nellie (Cupp) Courtney. He proudly served this nation during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army. He earned several medals while serving including the Purple Heart. He was a member of Fifth Avenue United Church of Christ, American Legion Post 11, Amvets, VFW, Military Order of the Purple Heart and DAV. Pete will be sadly missed by all those close to him especially during the last several months during his illness. Pete and his wife Geneva loved to take road trips and explore the countrysides.
Pete is survived by his wife, Geneva (DeLong) Courtney; sister, Nellie Bernice (Lee) DeLong of Lancaster. He also leaves behind close family members, Rosina T. DeLong, Carl H. (Tamera) Skidmore, Clint E. Skidmore and Dianna Skidmore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and his brother-in-law, Gerald DeLong.
A cremation has been handled with care by the Taylor Funeral Home in Amanda. A grave side service will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday July 23, 2018 at Amanda Twp. Cemetery with Rev. David Tingler officiating.
The family requests no flowers but would like contributions be made to Fairhope Hospice, 282 Sells Rd., Lancaster, Ohio 43130 in Pete’s memory.
