Richard McDonald

Richard L. “Dick” McDonald, age 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 17, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was born in Amanda, Ohio, on March 20, 1927, to Robert W. and Danae M. (Fausnaugh) McDonald. 
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Geraldine “Gerry”; son, Steve “Mac” (Arletta) McDonald; daughter, Linda McDonald; a niece, nephews, two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and many loving extended family members. Dick was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to everyone. He loved spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Karl and Merle and a sister Marcellette.
He was a life-long resident of Fairfield County except for his military and college years. He graduated from Amanda High School and entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. After being honorably discharged he entered Miami University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business, majoring in accounting. After graduation, he was hired by The State of Ohio Department of Commerce as an examiner for The Division of Building and Loan Association. He worked a short time before he was recalled by the Navy to serve in the Korean Conflict. When he returned home, he took what he thought to be a temporary job as a distributor for The Standard Oil Company. His dad had some health issues and Dick was helping him out until his dad could return to work. Dick liked being out and about in the county and visiting with people on the routes so much that he continued as a distributor until he retired in 1992. During his forty years as a distributor he shared in the joy of many generations of families. He always knew the names of every dog on his route and often stopped as he was driving down the lane to a farmhouse, so the dogs could jump in the truck and ride with him to the house.
Dick was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster since 1954 where he served several terms as an Elder of the Church; and sang in the church choir in the late 60s-70s. He was also a member of Amanda Masonic Lodge #509, helped with Boy Scouts; and a fifty-year member of UCT; former member of Olivedale; Legion 40 et 8 and Knight’s Templer.
A special thank you to the nurses in ICU and the Care and Comfort Unit at Fairfield Medical Center; and Fairhope Hospice for their loving care and support during his final days. The family would also like to extend their sincerest gratitude towards the church family, Pastor Steve, and friends; and Taylor Funeral Home for their comforting words, care and understanding during this difficult time. 
Cremation has been handled with care by the Taylor Funeral Home in Amanda.  A private graveside service will take place at Amanda Township Cemetery.  A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 22, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church, 222 N. Broad Street, Lancaster, Ohio with Rev. Steven Garstad officiating.  There will be a time for fellowship following the servce.
