Gracille Kuhn

Gracille M. Kuhn, born to James H. & Mary E. (Harris) McCain on May 10, 1929, the youngest and last of their 11 children. The oldest living sibling, Eva Hanley, lived to be 100 years old. Her siblings were: Elizabeth (Arthur) Fout, Daniel McCain, James T. (Vivian) McCain, Edith L. (Carl) Neal, Freda (Lester) Leasure, Ben (Helen) McCain, Donald (Rosie) McCain, Chester (Viola) McCain, and Pauline (Ray) Miller. All deceased.

Gracille married Cletus E. Kuhn Sr. on December 20, 1946, in Pickaway County. They were married for 63 years, prior to Cletus' death. She is survived by her children, Sandy (Tim) Carpenter, Tommy (Bettye) Kuhn, and Shirley (Millard) Good Sr.; daughter-in-law, Peggy Kuhn; Gracille was graced with eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; she was expecting the birth of a great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her son, Cletus E. Kuhn Jr.; grandchildren, Christopher "Freddie" Kuhn and Paula Mumford.

Gracille formerly worked at the age of 16, two jobs, along with her brother, Ben McCain at the Grand Theater, in Circleville. One ran the movie projector and the other sold snacks. Her second job was secretary to the Circleville Justice of the Peace. She was a former employee of General Electric and worked her way through Capital Beauty School, in Columbus, Ohio. Gracille held her Cosmetology Licenses for 35 years in Ohio. She opened her own salon and at one point had up to five operators working for her. In 1966, she obtained her license in Florida, working in a salon for Burdines for 5 years. Returning to Ohio, she worked at Lucy's Beauty Salon. After 6 years, she would once again open her own salon at 422 E. Main Street where she remained until her retirement.

Gracille was an active class member of the CHS Class of 1948. She loved serving on the planning committee each year her classmates met for dinner and laughs. She valued her special friendship with each of the remaining members.

Gracille had many accomplishments in her community. She was actively involved in community service for the "Old Peoples Home of Pickaway County". She provided hair care for numerous elderly residents at the facility. She served as Den Mother for the Boy Scouts. Headed up the Candy Striper Program of the American Red Cross at Berger Hospital. She was a founding member of the "High Fever Follies" Fundraiser of Berger Hospital, and P.T.A. Chairman of High Street School. She was part of a commercial for Schoedinger Funeral Home, which ran on local TV for two years. On St. Patrick's Day, 1963, Gracille, along with her daughter Shirley, completed a 50-mile hike to Columbus, Ohio.

Gracille was quite talented with crochet. She received numerous awards in local craft events for her work and gifted many family and friends with beautiful blankets. One of her beautiful baby blankets was gifted to NASCAR racer, Dale Ernhardt Jr. for the birth of his baby girl - Junior blessed her with a wonderful thank you card and personal note.

On her 94th birthday, May of 2023, her family blessed her with a "Living Celebration of Life", it was a beautiful celebration with family and friends. Then, at age 95, Gracille threw her own "Block Party" at Pickaway Manor Apartments, complete with a DJ & Karaoke.

Funeral service will be held at 12:00 on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Taylor-Theller Funeral Home, 111 W. Main St., Amanda, with Chaplain Jim Ferrell officiating. Interment will follow at Harrison Township Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Emergency Clearinghouse (Food Pantry), P.O. Box 1011, Circleville, OH 43113.

Gracille's family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of Compassus OhioHealth/Berger Hospice as well as the staff of Pickaway Manor Assisted Living.
